The nebula held many secrets, but none as dangerous as the enemy's hidden base. It was buried deep within the gas clouds, its presence masked by the swirling colors. Admiral Elara Vance had been tracking it for days, following faint energy signatures.

"Command, this is Vance. I've located the enemy's hidden base."

"Copy, Vance. Can you identify its defenses?"

She scanned the base, her sensors mapping its structure. "It's heavily fortified. But there's a weak point-a thermal vent on the lower deck."

"Proceed with caution."

Elara dove toward the base, weaving through its defensive fire. She fired a precise shot at the vent, and it exploded, triggering a chain reaction.

The base crumbled, its fragments scattering into the nebula.

"Command, the hidden base is destroyed."

"Copy, Vance. Good work. The sector is secure."

Elara flew through the nebula, her heart pounding. She had eliminated another enemy stronghold, but she knew there would be more.

She would keep hunting, keep fighting, keep protecting the galaxy from the shadows that lurked in the nebulae. And she would never rest until every enemy base was destroyed. The End.

The transport plane touched down at Nellis Air Force Base, the desert sun blazing through the windows. Captain Elena Vasquez sat by the window, her heart pounding, her eyes scanning the tarmac for a familiar face. Six months. One hundred and eighty-two days. She had counted every single one.

The door opened. The passengers filed out. Elena walked down the steps, her duffel over her shoulder, her eyes still searching.

And then she saw him.

Marcus stood at the edge of the crowd, his hands in his pockets, his face pale, his eyes red. He looked older, thinner, the way she must look older, thinner. But his smile-his smile was the same.

She dropped her duffel and ran.

He caught her, lifted her, held her so tight she couldn't breathe. She buried her face in his neck, breathed him in, felt the months fall away.

"You're home," he whispered. "You're home."

"I'm home," she said. "I'm never leaving again."

He laughed, a wet, broken sound. "You said that last time."

"This time I mean it."

He set her down, looked at her face, touched the scar on her cheek she hadn't told him about. "What happened?"

"Nothing. I'm fine. I'm here."

He kissed her, there on the tarmac, in front of everyone, and she kissed him back, and the world around them disappeared.

When they finally pulled apart, she was crying, and he was crying, and they were laughing at the same time. He took her duffel, took her hand, led her toward the parking lot.

"Let's go home," he said.

She looked at the base, at the jets on the runway, at the life she'd left behind. "Home sounds good."

They drove to the apartment, the familiar streets, the familiar building. Marcus carried her duffel up the stairs, unlocked the door.

The apartment was the same-the kitchen table, the cold coffee, the dog waiting by the door. Elena stood in the doorway, looking at the life she'd almost forgotten.

"Welcome home," Marcus said.

She walked inside, set down her things, and pulled him close.

"I missed you," she said.

"I missed you too."

They stood there, holding each other, the dog circling their feet, the sun streaming through the window. Six months of letters, of phone calls that cut out, of dreams that felt like memories.

But now, finally, she was home.

And she wasn't leaving again.
